It's been a while since we had a tournament. With warlocks population dwindling and new waving hands implementations (hopefully) just around the corner, I think it is the very time to have some good bouts in the circle to give this great game proper thanks. So, without further ado... - Registration will start on January 8th, 2014. That's one month away from now. Registration is open and free for everyone.
- Tournament will start on February 1st, 2014. It will be 4 rounds of Swiss => top4 single elimination. I see no reason to deviate from last tournament's structure as it, IMHO, worked just fine. I expect the tournament to be over by the end of April.
- If we get 16+ participants, Prize pot will be $100 + $50 for any of the following Master warlocks participating (registering and playing at least 3 full games): Prioli, Yaron, ExDeath, Slartucker, Taliesin, Tchichi. So yeah, if anyone somehow gets 4 masters to join, there will be $300 in pot =) Prize pot will be split 70%-30% between 1st and 2nd place. I don't know how will the prize will be transferred (depends on winner's location, really), but even if paypal and western union won't work, I'll come up with something.
So yeah. You have almost two months till tournament starts. Brush the dust off your accounts. Tell your old friends. Indulge yourself for a few matches despite your current work, hobbies, family and all that. Pay one final credit to this beautiful game, it well deserves it. There might be no other chance to. Discuss and bring HYPE! =)

... yeah!
That's awesome. It is as much awesome as it can be.
As for tournament format, it will greatly depend on number of participants, if we manage to gather a plenty of masters, you may extend the number of play-off players.
Also, lately I quite like Double elimination for playoffs. Since we hope to have all play-offers of the same (marvelous) skill, comebacks_from_loser's_bracket will keep the audience thrilled.

Schedule and rules draft are here: slarty.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=2014tourney&action=display&thread=912Mostly a copy-paste from 2010, but feel free to comment here if you think something needs to be changed. As for FDE, I don't really like this idea - it adds an extra month to the tournament and doesn't contribute to results consistency accordingly IMO. But speak up, if you guys will think this is a good idea, we might try it. Also yes, I'll be playing. And judging, unless some well-known top player will relieve me from the latter. I know I'll be suspected of bias and of helping myself, but oh well. I'll live with that if that helps us to have some beautiful games. If you don't think I can be trusted with this, just don't participate, I guess.

This is great, I was waiting for a tournament. I'll need to increase my ELO so that I'm eligible for registration.

My Elo just reset, so I may not be able to qualify. And it's probably for the best, as I don't have what it takes to beat a Master anymore.

After reviewing current state of the game, and thanks to MikeEB reminding that in Warlocks ELO is not preserved for inactive players, I think that idea of cutting 1550+ players was ill-considered.
So yeah, registration should be open to everyone, I guess.
I'll be sending announcements to everyone in the beginning of the week, so those who feel rusty will still have 6 weeks to bring their game up to the level.

Hey everyone. We got this registration going, which is awesome.
Still there is a thing I'd like to discuss with you all. It was suggested that we should consider playing all games as VF (parafc maladroit) this year. As some of you might recall, 'friendly' rule was intended to make players feel more responsible about their games due to playing for rating.
But it is possible that we should change is to VFs this year: this tournament aims at bringing back some players as well, and Warlocks have an irritating habit of discarding player's profiles after a while. Toyotami's profile is the fine example of this - while he might not be at his ~1900s, he definitely is not 1500, even after a long break, so making others play friendlies VS his 1500 might not be considered fair by some.
I personally can't bring myself to care much about rating this days, so I'm fine with any option as long as it will give me more interesting opponents to play =)
Please let me know what you think about it!

I will only play in this Tourney if the games are VF. It makes no sense to me to put 2000 elo players against 1500 elo players, regardless of where people's skills are at. The amount lost by a high elo player is significant should they lose, and the gains are practically non existent.
I care about rating now because I worked hard to get my rating up so I'm not going to squander it away in a tourney that is not part of RavenBlack's scoring system, but is rather just a Who's Who in the minds of small gathering of folks who want to make up new statistics once a year off the records - not with the current ladder and elo system that RavenBlack has established. And that's fine, but now let's not lose real scoring and rating over a tourney that uses only imagined ratings, that's all I'm saying.

i'd be fine with VF, i tend to not pay attention to if it's F or VF anyway (also always forget fdf and ff games...)
