wait... is this the internet or what? what happened to the flamewar!?? c'mon, *grabs torch, pitchfork* Slarty man, your decisions SUCK! man!! Der, LOOOOOOOSER! ... alright, I'll stop that now... ps - I do sorta like the idea of the league having some kind of relegation system... I can imagine a lot of fun having a league, that consists not only individuals, but of teams filled with said individuals... Then, each week, the #1's from each team play each other, the #2 do and so on for however many each team is (3, 4?) (3 would mean you could have the occational Friendly all in melee)... The only problem I would see with it is a numbers thing... there wouldn't be enough people to get involved in something like that...

Derfel, I apologize if it sounded like I was singling you out; I didn't mean to. Rather I would observe that, while more people have commented that they are glad to see Zugz get the wild card than not, the handful who have a problem with it keep commenting on it over and over again. I've been pretty clear about what I based my decision on; yet I keep hearing comments that my decision was unfair based on things I explicitly did not consider: points earned, games won and lost, slow play, caliber of play outside the tournament, opponent strength, even opponent Elo. (And nobody complained about the decision not being based on these things, I should point out, until AFTER the wild card spot was handed out.) So yeah, when I explain why I made a decision and then hear over and over that it's unfair for reasons that have nothing to do with it, I consider that "complaining." Shrug, I've never complained about it and don't intend to harp on it either, but for my two cents I wouldn't have put him through. Is he the best player to not make 6 points? Sure. But, for example, if I were in the tournament in a pod with 3 other great players and I somehow lost to all of them, in very close error-free games, to end up with 2 points..or if I didn't finish my games, or whatever.. I wouldn't ever consider myself worthy of the wild card spot. I won less games than other people who aren't going to make it. Games won and lost are, by definition, the primary criteria for moving forward in the tournament, so any wild card spot awarded should be based primarily on that same criteria, with any subjective judgment being merely a tiebreaker. But the real reason this is such a big issue, is that you didn't announce how you'd decide wild card spots before the pods started playing.

I doubt he got through because he was the "best" player (best outside of the tournament I mean, ELO or otherwise), I would assume Slarty saw something in the games he lost or didn't finish that made him worthy of continuing.

I would assume Slarty saw something in the games he lost or didn't finish that made him worthy of continuing. That is indeed what Slarty has said in previous postings. While I don't know if anyone was more disappointed by me in his decision (purely for selfish reasons,) the bottom line is that is was his subjective judgment to make. He's already indicated that he is frustrated with people questioning his decision. I recommend we let it go completely, say 'Thanks' a few hundred more times, and hope that he'll be willing to do this again next year. I guess the bottom line is that its just not worth pursuing if its upsetting the guy who's doing all this work to make this possible, even if the intentions are completely innocent - (which, by the way, I believe Derfel's to be.) And yes, this is all in hopes that there is a mystical third wild card out there, waiting to be found. I figure its an easter egg on the site somewhere. ;D

I have something similar to this already planned for the league... it's gonna be awesome. As several people suggested, the league will start off very basic to help it get off the ground, and will add more cool aspects over the first couple months.

As for next time, perhaps it would be easier to have a number of groups that's a power of two? If you'd had eight groups with four or five in each, rather than seven with five in each, at least it would be less arguable who got through. The problem, unfortunately, was your own pod system :/ While I like the pods a lot, they are unclean and break things. Suppose we'd had an eighth pod and no wild cards: then the Rycchus-Dubber-Spez clustercluck would have been unresolvable without a coin flip. (I'd say "or subjective judgment" but I'm not sure subjective judgment could resolve that particular tie; it was too close.) I'm not sure that's any better than what we ended up with. If I were a true pragmatist, I suppose the solution would be to pick who I wanted for the wild card, then lie and say it was a random choice. Unfortunately I'm not enough of a prick to do that. Oh well...
