Just curious who here is into MUDding. For you kids out there, MUDs are basically text-based MMORPG's. I have a MUD that I've been playing for 8 years on and off, currently on. It's RP-enforced with heavy emphasis on player-killing. I'm not the best, but I know a lot, and I'd be happy to get anyone started who wants to give it a try.

funny you should bring that up. I have never played any MUD's or MMORPG's, but recently I was thinking about giving it a try. I wanted to play something more text-based though, but I didn't know what's good and what's crap, so yeah, what's the name of the MUD game you like?

I still have the source code to my mud. I could throw it up on lurch, give ya goodies, etc. I haven't MUDed for quite some time. Ever since they made Everquest (basically a graphical port of Duris mud...)

It's one of the more popular MUDs out there, the only catch is it's RP-enforced which means you need to stay in character at ALL TIMES. Can't do anything like "((OOC: Need a smoke break))"

When I was in middle school, one of my classmates ran an old dikumud imp that I played on for a while.

I used to be an immortal at carrionfields.org, a diku-based mud. A fairly brutal PK mud, but also requires roleplay. However that kinda thing is a gigantic time sink that I just don't have anymore. Even if I did, I'd probably play WoW or something... it was kind of funny, tho, watching these MMORPGs come along and re-invent a whole bunch of stuff that had already been done before in MUDs.

Haha, FL is actually a takeoff of Abandoned Realms, which is a takeoff of Carrion Fields. I still have some of the old AR (mostly CF) source code on my computer from one of the imms there, but they've changed a lot.

..So I had a little trouble with the Aabahran: the Forsaken Lands client, and since I didn't want to spend a lot of time messing with that, I tried out Aardwolf, and connected no problem. OK, so now I know what a MUD is. Reminds me of 'chat rooms', except you get to kill the other characters... except I haven't even gotten past the tutorial, and don't know if I will. Cool idea, but big time suck. Just don't know how I'll have the time to learn all of that. It might be fun if you knew the thousands of commands by heart already and had your player at level 900... Maybe I'm just not cut out for that

I did just a touching of mudding about 12 years ago, but never really got that into it.
Oddly enough, I just downloaded the client for Lord of the Rings Online last week (14 day free trial) and I've found that game to be quite enjoyable thus far. Not sure if I'll pay the $10 a month after that or not, but the fact I'm even considering it means the game is much better than I expected.
I've been impressed with how closely they've tried to follow Tolkien's lore, which really helps me enjoy the experience.
If anyone gives it a try, do so on the Nimrodel server so we can play together.

I tried MUDding for about 3 weeks one summer years back. Meh. Found that unless you are starting out at the same time the server is, you just can't break into it well enough to enjoy it.

I played MUDs for a long time, but stopped because I didn't like PK, RP, and abuse of authority by staff members. I also wrote one (from scratch in java), still up at urmud.com). Someday I hope to make a graphical version of it.
