APPLICATION FOR NEW CLAN
So you think you want to start a clan... great! The Unraveller is looking for four clans and four members to lead them. If your clan is selected, you will become the clan's first Elder and will moderate its private forum. Then, as the year draws to a close, new and returning league members will flock to your clan, as well as to enemy clans.
If you think you'd like the start a clan, please read the information here, and then send a completed application to Slartucker using the link in the clan application thread. You are welcome to collaborate with a friend and submit clan applications that include pre-existing history or animosity between your two clans. Each will still be considered on its own merits.
If you submit an application early and it looks good but has some rough spots, I'll let you know in case you want to submit a second version. Likewise, all new clans are subject to editing if deemed necessary. I will avoid it as much as possible, but some things may be necessary, such as if every clan wants to have black for its clan color
Background Information
The four clans that are chosen will have distinct and colorful personalities. That can take any form; they might be distinguished by an interesting history, an extreme philosophy or set of practices, just about anything really. The four houses in Harry Potter provide a good example of what I'm looking for: they are full of associations and rivalries. Everybody knows which house is courageous, scheming, intellectual, or reliable. They are all associated with powerful figures from the past, with animals and spells, and so on.
Ideas for possible clan themes:
— Clan based around a particular historical, mythical, or fictional set of magical practices. For example, a clan based on Zoroastrian Magi, Egyptian ritual, mystical ninja techniques, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, druid-warlocks, etc.
— Clan based around a powerful magical figure or set of figures, from history, myth, or fiction. This could be an object of worship or just a spiritual forbear. Hecate is an obvious choice here. Eris, Mithra, Ahriman, Abraxas, various literary Dark Lords, Faust, historical alchemists, even Lim-Dul the Necromancer, these could all be good choices.
— Clan organized around a particular object or force, or a set of them. For example, a clan of warlocks venerating fire and fire magic.
— Clan organized around a guiding philosophy, such as ruthless competition and survival of the fittest, or the development of elaborate and elegant weaves.
— Renewed version of an old Warlocks clan such as the Order of Shadows, Cabal of the Phoenix, or -- dare I say it -- the Black Rose. Such a clan's theme would need to be fleshed out and added on to.
— Or, combine multiple theme elements.
The questions in the clan application should help to expand on and flesh out the personality of a clan, beginning with at least one kernel theme.
Expalantions of Specific Questions on the Application
Meeting Place: this will be the name of your clan's private forum, like "Cathedral Square" and "Dread Aerie".
Brief History: This is a misleading term. Obviously, all of these clans are coming into existence right now, and we aren't going to pretend (or retcon) them as having been around forever. However, they may have some kind of tie to an older organization or legend -- this may be a previous incarnation of the same clan (the Black Rose) or a distinct organization or individual your clan traces its heritage to (the Golden Dawn, Toyotami Hideyoshi, etc.). In this case you may want to give a brief history connecting your clan with its spiritual forbear. Or, you can relate events surrounding your warlock that led to him founding this clan.
Technical Questions: These questions specify how your clan handles certain situations. I have let clans handle them differently, to allow each clan's character to actually impact the rules. So think about how you *would* expect your clan to handle them. Does your clan tend towards democracy or despotism? Is there a strict hierarchy? Does it value seniority, skill, honor, innovation, or good-naturedness? I've listed a few possible answers for each question here. Feel free to use one of the suggestions, or not, as you prefer.
Intra-Clan Ties resolved by: This is for the individual warlock rankings within your clan, and it affects the Champion title if two warlocks from your clan have the same final score. Please don't choose "have the membership vote" for this one as the Weaver needs to be able to resolve ties on-the-fly.
— Use the differential to resolve ties (method used in league & in tournaments recently)
— Resolve in favor of seniority within clan
— Use simple win-loss record for the month as tiebreaker
— Use special points earned (i.e. not for wins/losses) this month as tiebreaker
— Flip a coin
Daimon title bestowed based on: You have complete flexibility on this one. The Daimon title is supposed to have spiritual significance so choose method and criteria that are closely tied to your clan's theme.
— Runner-up within clan to the Champion
— Have the membership vote (based on whatever criteria you like)
— Elder chooses (based on whatever criteria you like)
— Previous month's Champion chooses (based on whatever criteria you like)
— Previous month's Daimon chooses (based on whatever criteria you like)
— Member who got the most kills that month
— Member who earned the most special points that month
— Member who cast the most fireballs that month (for a fire clan) or whatever
— Member with the lowest league score that month
— Rotate to next member who hasn't had it yet / hasn't had it in the longest time, in seniority order (sort of a UN Security Council rotation)
Elder title bestowed based on: If you wish, you can specify an automatic elder change (via elections or whatever) after a certain length of time (no less than 3 months, please). You don't have to, though. Either way, you need to specify how the next elder is selected whenever the occasion comes up. (Note: since the Elder gets moderator powers for your forum, Slartucker has veto power over Elder choices, though I don't *ever* expect to use it.)
— Previous Elder chooses successor
— Daimon chooses
— Champion chooses
— 2 out of 3 of previous Elder, Daimon and Champion must agree on a choice
— Have the membership vote
— Most senior eligible member
Any other internal positions: If you want to have any other internal positions, specify them here. These would be dealt with entirely internally and the Weaver would not be involved. They don't have to be publicized at all if you don't want to. You could have a position that chooses the Daimon, that admits new members, that chooses potential new rules to vote on, or whatever. Think about your clan flavor. This is optional, though.
Process to choose the next league rule: When your clan wins the High Clan title, who chooses the next league rule? Everyone in your clan can at least give input on your forum, but who makes the final decision?
— Have the membership vote
— Champion chooses
— Daimon chooses
— Elder chooses
— 2 out of 3 of Elder, Daimon and Champion must agree on a choice
— Daimon chooses X options and membership votes on them, etc.
Process to join the clan: What does a prospective new member have to do to join? You are welcome to have a complicated process; however, for the first month, in order to get the clan system off the ground, new membership will be expedited, in that case. It's also okay if some of the clans are very restrictive. There will be at least one clan that accepts just about anybody. For this question you will want to think about how competitive your clan is: keeping a tight grip on who is allowed to join may help you increase your clan score, at a cost of being smaller and less popular. (Think about Harry Potter: there were restrictions on who could be chosen for Slytherin whereas Hufflepuff apparently welcomed the wizards who nobody else wanted.)
— Do they need to fill out an application, or just ask?
— Is approval by the Elder required? By a majority of the membership in a vote? By a unanimous vote of the membership? Or is no approval required at all?
— Is there a minimum requirement in terms of Elo or number of games played?
— Do they need to prove their worth by completing a task, such as defeating a gauntlet of clan members in battle; or by defeating a rival from another clan in a duel?
— Is there some kind of scurrilous frat boy initiation behind closed doors? ^_^
Can members be ejected for any reason? If so, what is the ejection process: This is unlikely to come up much, but you may wish to specify that somebody can be kicked out if they are telling your secrets to another clan, etc. In the case of a Slytherinesque clan you could also eject somebody for poor performance. You should specify the possible reasons for ejection here as well as the process:
— Is approval by the Elder required? By a majority of the membership in a vote? By a unanimous vote of the membership?
Process to change the clan description/rules: In case you need to change something in this description later, how do you do it?
— Is simple approval by the Elder required? By a majority of the membership in a vote? By a unanimous vote of the membership?
Phew! This has been a very long explanation, but hopefully it will help us create some highly engaging, well-fleshed out, fun clans!
