As you step into the arena, you suddenly feel nervous, fragile. Your opponent summons a goblin. It rushes straight into your missile, but in its death throes claws at your arm. It gashes the back of your hand, bringing pain the likes of which you have not felt since arriving on this blasted plane. You counter with a bolt of lightning, striking your opponent in his lead hand - and wince sympathetically as one of his fingers twists in a direction it shouldn't.
Later, after the battle you at last receive treatment for your wounds. Your left hand is swelling and two of your fingers are broken. But better that than your enemy, who could not even complete his final counterspell.
Normally, you can just soak up damage and be fine until the turn before you die. This month, your lead hand (assumed to be your Left hand) will gradually lose its ability to form gestures as you take damage.
When you fall to 10 Health, and every 2 Health thereafter, one of the fingers on your left hand becomes crippled (to a maximum of 5). For each finger that is crippled, you will be unable to intentionally perform one gesture with your left hand, according to the following table:
These are cumulative; with 6 Health left you will be unable to use C, > or F. With 2 health left, you are only able to use W, P and -. Should you be healed back above the threshold for a finger to become crippled, it is no longer crippled and you may resume using that gesture. Also, your injuries don't keep you from being forced to perform a gesture via Amnesia, Charm Person, Paralysis, Fear(>) or Maladroit; however, using a crippled finger is quite painful (-1 League Point).
Making a barred gesture while not under the influence of a mind-spell is a game loss.
Note: This only applies to the Left hand. Your right hand continues to gesture normally no matter how badly you are hurt.
Scoring:
+2 for each of your opponent's fingers that is crippled at the end of the game
-2 for each of your own fingers that is crippled at the end of the game
-1 for each barred gesture you are forced to make using a crippled finger
+1 for each such barred gesture your opponent is forced to make.
Also note that certain spells, such as Poison and Finger of Death, kill without doing damage. For scoring purposes, losing to such a spell does *not* cripple all your fingers.
Intentionally violating the league rule when not under the influence of a mindspell is an instant loss, even if the violator would otherwise win the game on the same turn. Additionally, any damage done by a spell cast via the offending gesture does not count towards crippling fingers. This strict measure is necessary because of how strongly the rule affects certain endgames.
