You know I skipped Bard's Tale back in the day, was more of a Wizardry person, but I gave the ][gs version a try last year (was the fanciest version I could find) and man, is that game a b!tch... today's games all have training wheels in comparson.
Right now I'm playing Etrian Odyssey II on the DS, it's fun, got that old school feel, drawing out your map on graph paper like back in the day... And I just laugh when I read reviews and people are like "Watch out!! This game is really hard!!" and it is a million times more forgiving than Bard's Tale or Wizardry.

I have all 3 Bard's Tale games for the GS. THing is... I made the mistake of taking the ... cards out of the thing to clean them, and didn't write down which slot they came out of. *SIGH* Man, I want to get it back up and running. Got a briefcase full of 3.5s mostly games. *grin*

If you want I can get you a copy of the games and a ][gs emulator... that's how I was playing it, on my PC.

I did Xeen a couple of years back. no where near as hard as i remember it especially if you play world. MM3 a bit more challenging, good in that you encounter monsters you can't kill every now and then.
I'd love to take a crack at Bard's Tale again with a INT score well above my 13 year old self's.

Be a more muscley team for bigger challenge.

I used dosbox to play all the way through Pool of Radiance last year, and even with the crappy 16 color graphics that game is still tons of fun.... fun enough for me to play it through to the end. The SSI gold box AD&D games are IMHO one of the best sets of games every to come out. Also dosboxed Ultima Underworld, another all-time favorite, and played it through to the end. Xeen crashed out on me part way through and I never got around to figuring out what was wrong... I did finish Xeen when it was new though, back in the day.

!! The gold box! How I *loved* that set! *so* freaking awesome!! And Underworld - what a classic! Both parts one and two! Definitely going to need to dust those off again one day!

and then, there was the misery that was named Ultima 9. Wonder if my new dual core machine with massive graphics card will finally be able to play that game...
