I have banned ExDeath for one week. After the week is up I will remove the ban.
Last night I made an essentially cosmetic alteration to the site that, frankly, I didn't think anybody would really care about, except possibly some of the users who had been crying out for months that the "master warlock" term was outdated. As it turns out, ExDeath really cared about the change. (So far, he is the only one who seems to care about it at all.) I would have liked to hear his opinion on it, actually, particularly given that I have tended to agree with him in previous discussions of the subject on these forums. But ExDeath read some things into the change that I hadn't intended, and began to attack me over them. (He also stretched the truth rather tenuously, such as claiming to be active due to his pariticipation in one non-Elo 6-person melee.) As his attacks became more and more abrasive, I got fed up with them and warned him in no uncertain terms that if they continued, he would not be welcome here.
ExDeath apparently decided that would be a good time to enumerate a list of all the things that are wrong with my personal character and tell me that I should cease having anything to do with the forums, and say things that I "don't deserve". (This post is the main thing that got him banned, and it is also the post that those of you decrying the ban have not seen, because ExDeath edited it all out as I was in the process of setting the ban.) After that, he made another post demanding I "compromise" with him, and he sent me a private message telling me that if I do not "do what I [ExDeath] asked" I should call or IM him immediately.
Frankly, I'm not here to deal with this crap. I've put an immense amount of energy into supporting the social development of the game. The Refuge, the 2006 tournament, these forums, the 2007 tournament, and the League of Mages were all my initiatives, and with the exception of BioLogIn's steadfast work on the League, pretty much all of the sweat going into their organization has been mine. Perhaps I just have a big ego -- in fact I probably do have a big ego -- but I still think I can say objectively that, had none of these things happened, Warlocks would be a very different environment today. Before I spammed the known world for the 2006 tournament, the active Warlocks list was shorter than it had ever been, and before the Refuge and the forums, strategic discourse had been virtually nonexistant for years. These are facts. Perhaps this community would have sprung up on its own, but the chances would have been slim to none.
I am not complaining, nor am I asking for any kind of acclaim or recognition. I never have. The recognition should rightfully go to the players who have participated in so many battles and debates and have persevered in their enjoyment of the game. And I organized these things because I enjoyed doing so, because I liked the community that grew around them, and because Warlocks has a special place in my heart (as gimpy as that last bit might sound).
But I don't think it's too much to ask that I be treated with a little common decency. Really, it's not too much to ask that everyone here be treated with a little common decency. ExDeath has crossed this line before, with succat. He crossed it again with me; he was warned; and still he proceeded with his vituperation.
I'm not willing to tolerate that here. That's that. I will welcome ExDeath back, provided only that he check his ego and his angry tongue at the door.
