I think we need more people. Definitely need something to shake things up a bit.
How would we go about raising the profile of this game? Is it a cash thing? or will it take spamming?

DubberThanks, I think I'd sooner start playing some mmorpg (which I've never done before) - same grinding, more fun =) xadeYa know, mate, I think that this game needs more people for last 8 years =) Don't know if anything (other then someone finally assembling a new game client, starting a new domain with better design and build-in forums) can be done about that. Ravenblack's implementation, while being very good in many ways, is extremely unfriendly to a new player. The game has a steep learning curve itself, and current implementation adds many obstacles. Still, this has little to do with my "pregnant dogging" (tm). It'll take a year at very least (ok, like 4-6 months for a genius, I suppose) for a new player to come to a force. If I'll beatch for a year, I'll turn into another eXd =) And with league laying dormant and competition scattered (what's with Toyo, btw? will he come back anytime soon?), it will be the harder for new blood to improve (say, to current 1850-1900 level). New players could be attracted by League and roleplay... and Clans would spur growth and provide shelter and competition. But League needs to be tended by someone with Slarty's ability to put roleplay up, not me. Without roleplay, daimons, sepulchre of secrets etc. League is an empty shell, barely being monthly tourneys for 16 persons. Not attractive to younger players in any way (not to mention special rules, which are fun to experienced players, but hard for those who aren't yet comfortable with regular ones).

Okay guys, that's it =) I've been beaten down below 2000, ladder 0 (thanks salvor, succat, saypin, xade, c1664). Serves me well for playing of auto-pilot recently. Time to get serious
And there were 45 guests at this forums today, yay! Props to someone for some good ads.

I think we need more people. Definitely need something to shake things up a bit. How would we go about raising the profile of this game? Is it a cash thing? or will it take spamming? When I first started here a couple of months ago, I found the game extremely interesting. I've been trying since then to get my friends to play, but they all shy away because it's too difficult to learn and most active players are leagues ahead of them, skill-wise. Many, unfortunately, are turned away simply by the lack of a shinier graphical interface. What we need is a new GUI and a tutorial of some sorts.. a primer battle for them or maybe a practice bot. I know bots for this game are theoretically complex but the practice bot would need only be a challenge to a new player. As of now I'm pretty swamped with college and work, however I am seriously considering a new game client (possibly something as simple as a frontend to Ravenblack's current website) and a rudimentary AI system that would allow new players to grasp basic concepts and strategy. As far as the GUI goes, I had in mind an animated group of warlocks who carry out the gestures given to them each turn, casting spells and summons as needed. The battle could then be viewed in full (or up to the current turn, if it isn't over) in realtime. This isn't really a useful feature for strategy, but it is eyecandy and eyecandy attracts players. I haven't decided if the animation should be in 3D or simply sprite animations, as I am not an artist. I've actually got quite a list of ideas for a new client, but I'll avoid hijacking this thread any further. If you'd like to help or want to know more, feel free to PM me.

I know bots for this game are theoretically complex but the practice bot would need only be a challenge to a new player. We have TrainBot, who unfortunately doesn't automatically accept challenges. It works on the principle of having a repeating 'preferred' sequence and simple rules about returning to that sequence after being disrupted.

That picture makes me happy. It makes me want to make a "whoosh!" sound effect.
