I agree with bio here. Maybe I'd only beat him (in a 2 of 3 match) one in sixty times, but I'm looking forward to trying it in the tourney.
I've lost tourney games to people several hundred points below me and beaten some people up above me. That's what makes it fun!

Doesn't sound fun to me if you win 1 in 60 games. But, whatever, bring the Tourney and let's go. Too many chickens on the ladder right now so can't climb that. Maybe Tourney will force chickens to peck a bit...

This would be my first tourney, so I'm hardly an authority, but I will say that in my experience people DO like having the chance to earn lesser titles, even if they're titles that the best players wouldn't feel very excited about.
This would be especially true if we use names slightly more thrilling than "Best player below ELO 1600."
But of course I'll go with whatever...and probably opt to play above my elo anyway.

My two cents is that we should stick with one division, but use a format like last year's so that even people who lose their first game or three can keep playing and get a lot of experience. I think that the best feature of a tournament is the chance to improve oneself, and there's no better way to do that than to get paired up with better players.
I attended a small Street Fighter 4 tournament a few months ago. This tournament tried to institute a "beginners" division (with no prize) and an "experts" division. I participated in the former and it was okay, but in retrospect I think it would have been better for me to have played with all the big kids. Even if I'd gotten my butt kicked, I'd have learned a lot more and gotten the opportunity for more interesting matches. Besides, there's always the chance that I would have managed to win an upset against somebody way better than I am, and these are the kinds of matches that people remember for a long time.

Lotsa Tourney talk, but no Tourney action... Bring It! Last year's format worked okay (except I didn't win) Let's go! Start it Aug 1 or Sep 1 whatever...

Dubber Well, doesn't make any sense to start Tourney during summer IMHO. We can start the registration on August 17th, and start tourney on September 7th (or on September 14th).
As for the competition for different "classes" of players, I guess I figured the workaround. We may have a single tournament, but a number of official nominations\titles, "Tournament Winner" being only one of those. I'd suggest to have 'Rookie of the Tourney' for best-performing player with ELO less then 1700 (1750? 1650?) and 'Best Improvement' (or something) for a participant with best (actual_place - predicted_place) difference, where predicted_place for each player is calculated before the tourney based on current ELO or popular vote or whatever. The 'Rookie' wiil be the title for new players to compete. 'Best Improvement' will mark a player who really tried her hardest and did better then her ELO would suggest she would =)

Bump. Awall and zugz, since you guys are back to action, maybe you have an opinion on this matter? My only opinion is: "cool, a tourney". The suggestions so far seem sensible.
