Actually most of over1700 - players are stuck with several openings while playing. And there are some personal rules(Like ellipsis one's) which also restrict number of possible matchups. As I always wanted to see succat playing S/W or ellipsis plaing D/P I suggest next game variant. Opening draft. Before starting the game every player is restricted to next opens: S/S, S/P, S/W, S/D, S/F, D/F, D/P, D/W, F/P, F/W, F/> Then draft starts. Two players consequently reduce number of positions in lists. On each turn of "draft" every player can cross-out two of possible openings of his opponent or cross-out one opening from own list. Draft finishes when every player have only one position in his list and then every player MUST start with opening in that list. Anybody wants to play opening draft vf?

Is S/S on the list twice for a reason?

On each turn of "draft" every player can cross-out two of possible openings of his opponent OR cross-out one opening from own list.
You can eliminate opens for anyone, but it is more effective to eliminate them from your opponent.

Second player to go has a significant advantage. They can mirror their opponent until close to the end and then counterpick their opponent.

yep, but the set of "counterpicks" isn't very large: S/W > S/S S/P > S/W S/W > D/W S/W > F/S S/S > F/P F/S > D/P S/D > S/S S/P > D/W
and that's all, I suppose

Yeah, but it still favors P2 and still it makes the entire draft less sensible - it doesn't matter much which options has P1 as long as P2 can guarantee to have a set of openings that are '>' then P1's set.

Maybe it would be easier to have each player rule out a set number (say 3 or 4) from their own set and opponent's set and pick randomly from the remainder?
And I forbid F/> for Ellipsis
Salvor's list: S/S, S/W, S/D, D/W, F/W, F/>
Ellipsis' list: S/W, S/F, D/F, D/W, D/P, F/W
