anyone know some good strategic warfare games, kinda like risk (love risk!) or the grid. however, it's best if they don't require lots of time; could be an hour or so per game (unless it's continuous like the grid) for when I need a short break. thx everyone! cheers

You can't go wrong with looking at the top games at boardgamegeek.com in the category you are interested in. I've discovered some real gems that way. I don't get into the straight warfare games quite so much (mostly because I have no one who will play them with me), but of course Settlers of Catan and the expansion pack Cities & Knights are great in a less warfare, but good strategy sense. Diplomacy is one of my top games to play over an extended period, allowing lots of time for negotiation, espionage, double-crossing and intrigue.

I don't know if this counts, but I recently started playing Shogi (a Japanese type of chess game) over on goldtoken.com/ - I'm not crazy about regular chess, but Shogi seems fascinating to me so far, although I just started playing and don't have any strategy figured out at all. The thing I like about goldtoken is that you can play slow games if you need to, and take up to 3 days for a turn if you want. That's extreme, but good for when you're just starting out and don't know what you're doing yet. If I get better I will prefer to play fast games that last a couple of hours or less. If you can get past a bit of a steep learning curve, seems like it could be a really fun game to play.

Mavena and Succat, thanks for your replies!
Btw, Succat, I don't know why, The Grid seems to have lost a little of its addictiveness. Nonetheless, I've really enjoyed the last 6 months of playing - it's a great game, just needs some tweaks. I hope to be back one day...
