Slow play update: Rycchus and Spacca began their round on October 18. They have now gone past the date at which Xade and Zugzwang would have received judgment (one month) and have completed fewer turns. They also received multiple prompts from me to continue playing.
There are two mitigating circumstances: (1) Due to their relatively early start, one or both players might have assumed there was less need to play at a reasonable speed. That was an incorrect assumption; however, because no hard and tight deadlines were specified in the rules, I feel I should make an allowance for it. (2) The Thanksgiving holidays are currently going on.
Taking all these factors into account, I am decreeing a final judgment date of Monday, November 26. I would advise both players to play at a reasonable speed until then. If the match has not concluded by the end of Monday (EDT), I will issue a ruling then. I am aware of the general speed of movement of each player; further comments on that subject may be directed to me.
LEARNING EXPERIENCE: This is getting ridiculous. Apparently, the smoothness of the 2006 tournament was quite an anamoly. Next time I run a tourament, there will be unwavering time limits for everything, even if it might be more meritophilic to leave room for flexibility. I would like to apologize to everyone involved for the frustration this ambiguous flexibility has contributed to.

Not at all -- you guys have played less than two weeks and are nearly through three games. That's fine.

Rycchus surrenders, bringing it to 1-1. games.ravenblack.net/warlocks?num=61451I very much doubt we'll have time for a third in the next few hours til 5 a.m. or whenever we've got til... but Spacca if you're up for it I'll happily go for it - not doing anything else tonight...

Let's do it. Now we are making some moves again I think we should be allowed to complete the third game anyway.

Well, I'm stuck. Both players put in a commendable effort to play quickly the past three days and have now completed 90 turns, which is about 45 turns each, in 40 days. While much better than the previous statistics, that's still barely 1 move per day, which is not really reasonable for the tournament. And no, I'm not going to go back on my word about a date for judgment.
Both players contributed to the slow play, however, Rycchus did so more severely (at least 8 days of not playing and another week afterwards of halting play) than did Spacca (about 4 days of not playing). Because the speed did improve I don't think there's a need to disqualify anyone automatically based on speed. However, the score ended up 1-1, and the third game is definitely too close to call -- it's hard to even find an advantage in it.
Rycchus's win in the first game was very strong, slightly more decisive perhaps than Spacca's win in the second game. So were speed not an issue, I would rule in favor of Rycchus. However, the third game would have more than the potential needed to upset this slight advantage. So I ask: had Rycchus played at Spacca's speed during the two slowest weeks, how many more turns would the third game have? Likely about 42, assuming two sets of moves per day. So the third game would probably be finished. The third game clearly has the potential to go either way. Therefore, if Rycchus were to win the match based on her advantage in the first game, this would be unfair to Spacca, who has a reasonable chance to win (or pull ahead in) the third game. Although Rycchus also has a reasonable chance to do so, perhaps even a greater chance, she bears primary responsibility for neither of them having that chance.
Therefore, I find that the fairest judgment I can make is to hand the match victory to Spacca. Yes, that's official.
Apologies in advance to those who dislike the decision. I hope that I have already made my frustration with this situation and with the flexibility of the tournament rules quite clear. So I would prefer that we not get into a heated debate over this. I'm not going to, at any rate.

Wow... just wow. That last one was probably the most intense finish I've ever had. We're apparently quite evenly matched. Good game, and look forward to hearing Slarty's verdict.
I highly encourage anyone interested in close games to give that last one a look, as well as our second game (61566). Both of them involved a substantial portion of the game in which both players had critically low health. Pity Warlocks isn't more of a spectator sport.

I have most of a decision, but because the games are so !@#$# close, I'm getting a second opinion before I finalize it. Therefore, I'm not quite sure when I can release the judgment; sometime this weekend, certainly.
