I'll start discussion stating that in round 1 no one got a 'killer' set of opponents... with awall and toyo getting somewhat stronger pairings IMHO.

I get to play against awall and toyo - that seems reasonably difficult to the likes of me. Should be fun!

Maybe nobody got a "killer" set of pairings, but vermont/Bio/xade doesn't look too pleasant. I'm in for a rough ride, it would seem.

I'm glad it's BioLogIn with his pairing & not me update: Challenges away to Igrek, Saypin, & Spleenboy

Just a thought, winning with a kill should earn you slightly more points than a win from surrender.

Just a thought, winning with a kill should earn you slightly more points than a win from surrender. Strongly disagree. See this thread for a discussion of why kills aren't a measure of actual skill.

heh, I think *before* the tourney was the time to register such concerns... Now, if I'm "playing" someone in my fantasy team, would it be wrong to "string-out" the game so that my team got more turn points...

I meant when you are able to kill a good player (someone who does not want to die), you should be rewarded. IMHO, if you take a risk and die, you should be punished, I think even a -1 is too weak, perhaps a -2 is better (as a double death comes back as a draw 3-2=1). If we have problem with "lucky kills" then we might consider having a qualifying round first, to weed out the weakest/casual players. Of course it's too late to change rules for the current tourney but perhaps we can consider this in future games.

This is already implemented in league matches and IMO it's horrible, but if you like it, the league will be back up after this tournament finishes. Basically I don't feel it's any more "skillful" to kill a good player than just beating them outright, because if you kill me, it means either the game was very very close with us both at low health, or I stuck it out and chose wrong in a 50/50. Either way, I don't see the kill as meaningful, really.

I'm not good enough yet to play the league. I already have a hard time remembering how to play the basic game, adding in those "interesting" rules kinda killed the fun for me at this stage.
Anyway, I believe given enough care anyone can win a game. However, to be able to make a game interesting enough to lure a great player into fighting you to the death, that take skills IMO. I'm sure players who has managed to kill you before must have enjoyed it that little but more than just a win, especially during those final minutes when your heart pounces as tens of hard earned ladder points can be gone in a single wrong move.
No problem if nobody wants to glorify kills like me, but we should at least reconsider punishing deaths (i.e. surrender=0, killed=-1) - in future games...

Again, most kills, although satisfying, are the result of a very close game and not some mammoth advantage by one side. In those types of situations it's usually very easy to surrender.

Academic discussion anyway -- the Tourney is on, the Rules are set. Opponent killed or Opponent surrendered -- either way you're still called "the winner"

I dunno, derfel, you could be *the* impediment to Freesoul, Tchichi, and Twobee. Many other players would be in your debt
